The Foundation has been closely partnered with the 10th Mountain Hut association, which manages a system of 34 backcountry huts in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, connected by 350 miles of suggested routes and focuses on promoting the backcountry experience and the pursuit of excellence, self-reliance, and love of the outdoors that characterizes 10th Mountain soldiers
Open to the public on a reservation-based system, 10th Mountain Huts provide a unique opportunity for backcountry skiing, mountain biking, or hiking while staying in secure, comfortable shelter.
The Hut Association also offers a variety of backcountry educational classes and programs that include:
- Backcountry medicine
- Avalanche level 1 training
- Hut-to-hut ski tours
The Foundation’s support includes helping to fund the Hut Association’s Backcountry Exploration Program, which encourages the use of huts by educational non-profits, promotes a better understanding and appreciation of the natural mountain environment, and develops individual self-reliance among hut users as a way of honoring all 10th Mountain Division soldiers killed in action, veterans, and the legacy they created.
