Before submitting an application, we encourage all applicants to review the Foundation’s mission, funding priorities, and program areas to ensure strong alignment.
The 10th Mountain Division Foundation supports efforts that are clearly connected to the Division’s legacy – whether through service, history, education, or community impact.
Applicants should also be aware that the Foundation offers multiple funding pathways, each designed to support different types of individuals, organizations, and initiatives.
Successful applications demonstrate not only a compelling idea, but a meaningful connection to the 10th Mountain Division and its enduring values.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, allowing organizations and individuals to apply when opportunities arise.
Applications submitted by August 15 are reviewed for October determination, with funding awarded in January.
Outdoor Experience applications may also be submitted by February 15, with determinations in April and awards in June.
Throughout the process, the Foundation engages with applicants to ask questions, provide clarification, and ensure strong alignment with the mission.
The Foundation offers several types of funding opportunities, each with distinct goals, requirements, and application processes. Selecting the right pathway is an important first step.
We provide funding to individuals pursuing educational and professional development opportunities that reflect the values and legacy of the 10th Mountain Division.
This includes:
• Outdoor education and leadership certifications
• Technical training and skill development
• Academic pursuits aligned with service and leadership
The Foundation has partnered with the Professional Ski Instructors of America and American Association of Snowboard Instructors (PSIA/AASI) to fund two certification grants for 10th Mountain soldiers and veterans who want to pursue becoming snowriding instructors. These grants cover the first year membership plus training and certification testing costs.
The Foundation partners with Stride and Move United to help injured 10th Mountain veterans rediscover confidence, independence, and community through adaptive snowsports. Annual grants support participation in programs like Stride’s Snowfest and Move United’s Hartford Ski Spectacular in Breckenridge, which offers ski and snowboard instruction, adaptive sports clinics, and community events for severely injured veterans. Our scholarship programs support soldiers, family members, and descendants of the 10th Mountain Division pursuing higher education.
These awards are based on a combination of:
• Merit
• Financial need
• Demonstrated connection to the Division
• Reflection on the legacy and its impact
Learn more about specific scholarships, applicant criteria, and application processes below. Please note that the scholarships all have different application processes, so please pay close attention to specific requirements and submission instructions.
This scholarship is for current or former 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) members or family members (spouse or child). Colorado Army National Guard and Vermont Army National Guard members who were part of the 10th Battalion should check with the Association for eligibility.
The 10th Mountain Division Descendants Patt Finn-Thornton Scholarship is for high school seniors who are direct descendants of a WWII 10th Mountain Division veteran AND are active in the 10th Mountain Division Descendants organization. This merit-based scholarship requires a research essay.
The Foundation Forever Scholarship is for junior college, technical school, college, or graduate students who are direct descendants of a WWII 10th Mountain Division veteran. Applicants must write a research essay and demonstrate financial need for this one-time award.
The Charles A. and Loyola M. Murphy Endowed Scholarship is for doctoral or post-graduate students focusing on the 10th Mountain Division. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, provide a thesis statement, and share their final thesis with Denver Resource Center.
We provide grants to nonprofit organizations, museums, educational institutions, and community groups working to preserve, honor, and extend the 10th Mountain Division legacy.
This includes:
• Historical preservation and collections
• Memorials and monuments
• Outdoor programs and community initiatives
We do not normally fully fund any project, but collaborate to add value. We are no longer soliciting for new monuments, but interesting requests will be considered.
